Movement for Decent Work-Decent Life Launched in Laguna

A Leaders Forum on “Marangal na Trabaho-Marangal na Buhay” was held last February 20, 2010 at Riverview Resort in Calamba City, Laguna.

The affair was sponsored by top leaders of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino-Southern Tagalog (BMP-ST), AKBAYAN-Laguna, Sosyalistang Ugnayan ng Manggagawang Pilipino (SUMAPI), Nagkakaisang Lakas ng Manggagawa sa Laguna (NLML), Kapayapaan Homeowners’ Association (KHOA-Canlubang), Samahang Magkakapitbahay ng Brgy. Lamot I (Calauan), Southville Phase 5 Homeowners’ Association (Cabuyao), Maligaya Homeowners’ Association (San Pedro), Bigkis ng Manggagawa sa Arcya Glass and CALABARZON Displaced Workers Association (CADIWA).

It was attended by more than 300 leaders of local organizations representing the sectors of workers, urban poor, TODA, vendors, fisher folks, concerned homeowners and displaced workers in the province of Laguna.

The theme was inspired by the “Decent Work-Decent Life Campaign” spearheaded by the alliance of Solidar, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Social Alert International and Global Progressive Forum. This campaign was launched in Nairobi on January 2007 to appeal to all nations to live up to the 2005 UN World Summit agreement of placing full and productive employment and decent work as a central objective of relevant national and international policies.

The attainment of Decent Work and Decent Life calls for an interactive participation of the people to ensure that decent work is integrated in the programs and policies of the government. Hence, some politicians aspiring for local and national post were invited in the forum to share their views, but failed to attend and sent their representatives instead.

The forum focused on the need to generate and broaden opportunities for adequate employment, education, housing, workers rights and labor standards, health care, social protection, social dialogue and representation of marginalized sectors in the government.

Before the forum ended, the participants enthusiastically adopted the following resolutions:

1. Form the “Decent Work-Decent Life Movement” with the Convenor as Interim Officers;
2. Further develop the Decent Work-Decent Life Agenda into a ” People’s Action-Platform” that will serve as a framework in the 2010 election and beyond and as a tool to challenge and gauge aspiring politicians;
3. Recruit members and organized chapters of movement in within their local organizations, families, communities and workplaces.
